Pelosi picks Democrats to lead new-NAFTA talks as Trump urges speed

〖2019-6-20〗

US HOUSE of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has picked members of her caucus to negotiate with the White House on changes to President Donald Trump's new North American trade.

Although still consumed with hatred for the Trump administration there is reason to think that Democrats will work well in this case as they generally favour the President's continental trade policies.

Democrats' big concern is social justice for Mexicans, which means imposing more costs on Mexico's businesses, thus making their products less competitive, which suits Republicans policy perfectly,

This signals momentum towards an eventual floor vote, according to two people familiar with the matter, reports Bloomberg News

Massachusetts Democrat Richard Neal, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, will lead the group that will negotiate directly with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

The members will focus on four areas, including Congressman Earl Blumenauer, the Oregon Democratic chairman of the Trade Subcommittee, who will cover drug-pricing provisions with Illinois Democrat Janice Schakowsky.

A bipartisan staff delegation went to Mexico City this month for a fact-finding mission to assess the implementation of Mexico's recently passed labour reform bill.

The President said the deal was "coming along well" and that he hopes it gets approved quickly. "Everybody wants it. It's in Congress right now. It's in the House. And they're reviewing it. I think that'll be a very bipartisan bill," he said.
